This year’s International Symposium for Olfaction and Taste (ISOT), probably the most important conference for German olfactory researchers, was held in Reykjavik, Iceland, an exceptional location. The ISOT is organized every four years by organizations from Europe, Japan, and North America.

Among the 726 researchers from 31 countries were group leader Prof. Jessica Freiherr, four scientists from the NeuroSense Lab, and Dr. Helene Loos from the Sensory Sciences. Prof. Freiherr and Dr. Loos each gave presentations entitled “Subjective perception of positive and negative emotional body odors and common odors in autism-spectrum disorders” and “Body odor analysis: current insights and future perspectives”.

In addition, the scientists Dr. Doris Schicker and Satnam Singh (both Fraunhofer IVV, Freising), as well as Sally Arnhardt and Moritz Engelhardt (both Friedrich-Alexander-University, Erlangen), presented their latest research in the form of scientific posters.

In addition to exciting presentations and enriching discussions about the latest developments in odor research, there was also time to explore the breathtaking nature of Iceland.

A fantastic piece of news rounded off the conference: Sensory Sciences group leader Prof. Jessica Freiherr was appointed General Secretary at the board meeting of the European Chemoreception Research Organization (ECRO) and will therefore be even more directly involved in the development of olfactory research in Germany in the future.
